Reasons to Rethink Your Corporate Tax System

    -

Is it the appropriate time to reconsider the corporate tax system? Given the fact that corporations view taxes as a necessary but burdensome expense associated with conducting business, this is the question that most managers are asking themselves.

In response to the recent changes to the corporate tax system, the majority of corporations are now devising novel strategies to maximize their profits. These factors, such as global tax-reduction opportunities, sophisticated tax shelters, and high-priced finance, have now forced corporations to turn their tax function into a profit center.

There is an abundance of evidence that demonstrates the change in the tax function within corporations from being a compliance function to a profit center. The capital markets and tax authorities are now cut off from corporations’ income reports.

This has been facilitated by the dual-book system, which enables organizations to distinguish profits for tax authorities and capital markets. Since firms have two points of view on their economic situation, this system ensures that they do not appear to be in a worse position to the IRS.

There are numerous reasons why managers are now altering the way they view the corporate tax system and seeking the assistance of professionals in the field of tax advisory Singapore. First and foremost, financial engineering has significantly led to low-cost income re-characterizations for book and tax purposes. This has led to the elimination of tax obligations in firms that are not under pressure.

Secondly, the decreasing costs of global transactions and the expanding global reach of companies have prompted managers to reevaluate their tax system. At the outset, a large number of firms were exclusively engaged in operations within their respective countries and were not exposed to the global marketplace. However, the decrease in the cost of financial transactions as a result of globalization has enabled the reallocation of profits to jurisdictions with reduced tax rates.

Last but not least is the fact that incentive compensation patterns are changing. This change has intensified incentives to the extent that they can produce profits from specific components of the company. Since the majority of firms relied on the same incentives when conducting business, this was not feasible.

It is advantageous for shareholders to reconsider the corporate tax system, as it tends to alleviate their financial obligations. Essentially, if the shareholders are the recipients of all of this value, it would represent a transfer from the tax authorities to the shareholders. However, the extent to which shareholders benefit has not been adequately assessed. It is unsurprising that a greater amount of tax advisory services in Singapore is necessary in this context.
