Xi Jinping is on Journey Of Peace, Xi & Putin Applaud Ties Amid Ukraine War

    -

Chinese leader Xi Jinping arrived in Moscow on Monday to meet with Russian President Vladimir Putin, a visit that will highlight the solidity of their alliance and be closely watched by Kyiv and its Western allies. The two leaders will also discuss possible steps toward peace in Ukraine.

Xi described his trip as a “journey of friendship, cooperation, and peace.” Still, analysts warned that China would have to use its influence to push for multiparty negotiations between Russia and Ukraine. In a statement released by the government, the Chinese leader said he would seek to ensure that “Russia and Ukraine can negotiate peacefully by international law.”

Putin has portrayed his relations with China as a crucial counterweight to the U.S.-led NATO, a bloc he blames for bringing about the Ukraine conflict. In a letter to the People’s Daily, he praised China’s policy of backing Ukraine, calling it “an essential step forward in establishing and strengthening the Russian-Chinese partnership.”

He called for Russia and Ukraine to negotiate a political resolution to the crisis. Putin also criticized the International Criminal Court’s decision to make him a wanted man, saying it was an unacceptable violation of his right to privacy.

Analysts say that Xi and Putin seek to bolster their ties in the face of an increasingly tricky foreign policy, mainly because of their growing dependency on each other’s economies. They are trying to show they can confront the West using their economic strength.

This has implications for the future of the U.S.-led world order and may even lead to creating a new world system that more closely aligns with Moscow’s interests. The wording used by China and Russia in their official statements will reveal if they believe their economies can enable them to challenge the West or continue to rely on the United States and Europe for support.

Putin has seized on China’s opposition to US plans for expanded military and economic ties with Europe as a reason to back the war in Ukraine while also threatening to challenge Washington and its NATO partners in other parts of the world. The two leaders have also expressed their shared view that a nuclear-armed world is unsustainable and will eventually end, as the Soviet Union did in 1991.

Despite the Russian president’s public praise for China, Beijing has been critical of his war in Ukraine. Western nations consider it tacit backing and diplomatic cover for a conflict that has strained relationships between Russia and the West.

In the past, China has played a limited role as a mediator in conflicts that have pitted its interests against those of its neighboring countries. But the government’s release last month of a 12-point position paper on the war, as well as its upcoming visit, are designed to give Xi and Putin a smoke screen that will allow them to continue pursuing their policy of a no-limits relationship without attracting the attention of the Western nations that want to isolate Russia, according to Jonathan Eyal, an expert at the Royal United Services Institute in London.
