What You Need to Know about Gifted Education Programmes

    -

If you are reading this, it is possible that you have heard about or are familiar with Singapore’s gifted education programme. To help intellectually gifted students reach their full potential, this programme was developed. The Ministry of Education originally presented it in the year 1984. Subsequently, it was established as a component of changes aimed at developing an educational system that is accommodating to a wide range of learning aptitudes and skills.

Upon further investigation, it was shown that certain children who were exceptionally bright thrived on a high level of intellectual stimulation, while others may become average. Those students who are gifted would be required to follow the standard curriculum and take the same examinations as their peers who are not gifted. Nevertheless, new subjects were included in order to provide students with a more comprehensive coverage of the topic.

The “Gifted Project” concept paper from 1983 included a planned programme that was based on the principle of enrichment. In the article, the goals of the gifted education programme were outlined. These goals included the development of higher-level thinking skills as well as the ability to learn independently. The selection of pupils for the programme and the identification of teachers were also covered.

In order to select teachers and pupils for the gifted education programme, conduct teacher training sessions, develop the new curriculum, and carry out the programme, a special project unit was established not long after in May 1983. The members of the project then participated in a training course that lasted for one week and was led by an expert on education for gifted youngsters.

Through regular feedback and informal meetings including pupils, the principals of their parents’ schools, and teachers in cooperation with the Ministry of Education, the development of the gifted education programme is reviewed. This programme has received favorable reviews and acclaim for its capacity to effectively provide high-potential students with development in all areas of their lives. The majority of former GEP students were successful in gaining admission to prominent colleges around the world, according to a poll conducted in 2005 and 2006.

However, there have been instances in which students have struggled to deal with the workload and expectations of the programme, as well as being subjected to criticism and discrimination from their own peers. In addition, the gifted education programme has been criticized for creating elitism. This is due to the fact that students in the gifted education programme preferred to interact primarily with one another and had difficulties relating to their peers who were not in the gifted education programme.

It is crucial to keep in mind that this programme has gradually increased in both the basic and secondary levels. The gifted education programme has changed at the post-college level as a result of the introduction of the integrated programme.

The gifted education programme has the advantage of allowing students to advance to junior college, despite the fact that the curriculum and methodology are comparable.
