Rajinikanth’s Jailer 2 Crosses ₹700 Crore at the Box Office

Superstar Rajinikanth has yet another blockbuster on his hands with Jailer 2, which has apparently surpassed the 700 crore milestone in global collections within two weeks of its release. The action film, helmed by Nelson Dilipkumar, drew crowd to the theatres in India and abroad, bolstering its footfall in the list of Tamil film industry’s biggest commercial outings.

Per a box-office tracking report dated October 27, the film crossed the 733.35 crore mark worldwide in 12 days. The film is beating the 691 crore gross of Rajinikanth’s 2.0, a 2018 science-fiction film, which has been widely shared by trade experts but still remains a disputed number.

Jailer 2, which hit the theatres on October 15, started showing signs of growth in its opening days before netting over 600 crore at the worldwide box office in just the first week. Its second-weekend numbers took the film past 700 crore, becoming the first Tamil movie to do so.

Sequels and prequels and how the sequel’s success pushes it ahead of big Tamil releases!… The sequel’s collection has also apparently surpassed other big Tamil movies such as Vijay’s Leo and the first Jailer, based on usual gross estimates across the world. It is indicative of the continuing commercial strength of established Tamil movie franchises.

Note on Box-Office figures all of these numbers are estimates obtained from industry insiders and trackers, and do not constitute audited financial statements. Particulars may vary marginally according to the source due to different reporting practices, currencies, and update schedules.

Domestic viewers have played a significant role in the film’s total earnings. By the 12th day, industry reports estimated its gross collection in India at roughly 477.85 crore, while net collections stood at about 408.15 crore. Gross collections account for taxes, whereas net collections do not, so the two amounts are not directly comparable.

The Tamil version continued to lead in India, with Telugu and Hindi screenings contributing to the overall total. Kannada was a less represented language in India.

An additional major revenue stream has come from foreign markets. Several reports in the second week of the film estimated overseas collections at roughly 243.5 crore, showing the ongoing strength of foreign markets for Tamil-language films.

This, together with the overseas audience has resulted in Jailer 2 crossing a mark that had eluded many such Tamil biggies for collection.

Rajinikanth comes together with director Nelson Dilipkumar once again after their blockbuster original Jailer. The franchise combines elements of action, humor, and crime-drama. Rajinikanth reprises his role as Tiger Muthuvel Pandian, a retired jailer.

Jailer 2 does hold up at 700 crore and above based on today’s trade estimates but should be taken with a pinch of salt when comparing to 2.0. The 2018 film has been said to have grossed around 800 crore in the worldwide markets, although tracker numbers and industry estimates often settle around 691 crore.

As the original has not been uniformly and definitively established for worldwide collections, the exact all-time rankings of the original film are unverifiable and should depend on which estimate is accepted. Regardless, Jailer 2 has Definitely gained recognition as one of the biggest reported successes at the Tamil box office.
